Recital: Moshe Elmakias '21 MM, Jazz Piano
NEC's students meet one-on-one each week with a faculty artist to perfect their craft. As each one leaves NEC to make their mark in the performance world, they present a full, professional recital that is free and open to the public. It's your first look at the artists of tomorrow.
Moshe Elmakias '21 MM studies Jazz Piano with Billy Hart, Miguel Zenón, Donny McCaslin, Nasheet Waits, Ethan Iverson, Jason Moran, and Frank Carlberg and is the recipient of the Alice Canaday Endowed Scholarship.

Andrew Hill | Snake Hip Waltz
Andrew Hill was an outstanding pianist and composer. I have not heard of him until I came to NEC, and his music opened my eyes to a huge field of possibilities that I was not aware of.
Artists- Chris Worden, double bass

James P. Johnson | Carolina Shout
Stride for me is the Prelude of the jazz piano. Thanks Frank, Ethan, and Jason who introduced me to this style and encouraged me to add it to my daily practice routine.
Moshe Elmakias | Longings
I wrote this piece inspired by the Lydian Chromatic Concept theory by George Russell. I took the LCC class with an awesome teacher, Ben Schwendener, who showed me other ways of listening and analyzing music.

Moshe Elmakias | Winter Painting
A piece inspired by the Boston winter and its unique landscapes

Duke Ellington | Janet
Frank and Ken introduced me to the beauty of Duke’s music. It is amazing how simple the music is, but how challenging to perform. Like Mozart in that way.

Moshe Elmakias | What's your Story?
Every day on my way to NEC, I passed by people who have found their homes on the streets of Boston, and I wondered what the story of each of them is.
Artists- Chris Worden, double bass
- Joey Van Leeuwen, drums
Moshe Elmakias | It Used to be Me
I wrote this piece more than a year ago. It is interesting for me to look at older pieces of mine and to see the progress I have gone through- in composition and performance.

Moshe Elmakias | Ariel's Song (lyrics by Astghik Martirosyan)
I showed that piece to Astghik, and a week later she came with these beautiful lyrics.
Text
Ariel’s Song
You see me with my open heart,
Where love and pain live together and fight.
Here, In our silence
Our souls speak to each other.
In your arms there is spring
And there’s faith and hope.
From the sunlight and warm winds
I chose to gently close my eyes
But there they were again,
Pictures, Lost in the darkness and light
Running in front of my eyes
And I was lost in the mist
Lost in the sounds and colors
I opened my eyes
And there it was
The path of truth and fight in your eyes.
Take me home, to my home
Where we are not alone,
Where our tree of cherry
Is probably blooming now

In the past two years, I was blessed to be surrounded by good people. People who love me. People who always want good for me. People who are always there for anything I might need. People who inspired me to be a better person, a better musician, and a better English speaker!
Those people- my friends, my teachers, my family, my co-workers, my Rabbi, and my audience. Thank you.
