New Student Health Requirements
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health requires documentation of certain immunizations, or proof of immunity, to certain illnesses for all full-time students enrolled in Massachusetts, regardless of age or degree status. As with all vaccinations, students may request an exemption for medical or religious reasons by following the steps outlined in the linked documents above.
NEC recommends that members of our community have up-to-date COVID-19 vaccinations (completion of the primary series plus one booster vaccination when eligible).
Please submit your immunization documentation one month before the start of your first semester. Students who do not submit their documentation before NEC’s Orientation (by Friday, August 22nd) will have a compliance “hold” placed on their account that prevents them from registering for classes.
Required Immunizations
You must provide documentation of the following:
- Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis (Tdap): One dose of vaccine on or after age 10
- Once you call the CCW number above, you will be advised to visit the center for an appointment or be referred to a specialist.
- Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR): Two doses of vaccine or blood tests showing immunity. The first shot must be given after 12 months of age, with each vaccine given at least four weeks apart
- Varicella (Chickenpox): Two doses of vaccine given at least four weeks apart or a blood test showing immunity or a date of disease certified by a healthcare provider. The first shot must be given after 12 months of age
- Hepatitis B: Three doses of hepatitis B vaccine (or two doses of Heplisav) or a blood test showing immunity
- Meningitis ACWY: One dose on or after your 16th birthday
Recommended Immunizations
The following vaccines are not required, but recommended for your health:
- Flu vaccine for the current influenza season
- COVID-19 vaccine based on CDC recommendations
- Tdap booster is recommended every 10 years
- Human Papillomavirus (HPV) series
- Meningococcal-B (MenB) vaccine
First, gather your documents. Allow enough time to obtain your records and needed signatures. When locating your vaccine records, try the following:
- Ask a parent or guardian.
- Contact your healthcare provider or search in your online medical portal.
- If you are a graduate student, submit a medical record request from your previous institution.
- Contact your local or state health department. Many states and outside countries have vaccine registries.
Next, please carefully review and complete the New Student Health Report. As you complete the Health Report, please use the New Student Health Report Checklist as a guide, which provides you with step-by-step instructions for the successful completion of the form.
Complete the form with help from your healthcare provider. To be approved, your form must:
- Be signed by a healthcare provider.
- Be completed in English (or officially translated into English).
- Be legible.
- Be dated with the month, day, and year of the immunization.
- Statements such as “received as a child,” “records were lost,” or “up to date” will not be accepted.
Take a picture of your completed forms in a vertical orientation, or scan them to your computer. There should be one picture for each page.
Submit your completed forms using the NEC Student Health Portal:
- Register as a user on the NEC Student Health Portal with your NEC Student ID number by going to necmusic.studenthealthportal.com.
- Once registered, click on the “Document Upload” button and follow the prompts to upload a copy of your NEC New Student Health Report and the front and back of your health insurance card by July 15, 2025.
- Keep a copy of the NEC New Student Health Report for your records.
Unable to submit online? If you are unable to upload the Health Report, mail a physical copy of the completed Health Report by July 15, 2025 to the following address:
Counseling & Wellness Center
New England Conservatory
290 Huntington Avenue, SB 112
Boston, MA 02115
Please contact the Counseling and Wellness Center at 617.585.1284, with any questions concerning your Student Health Report or with any questions regarding the Student Health Portal. During the summer, you can reach out to student.services@necmusic.edu for questions and support.
If you have not received all required vaccines, please submit your immunization documentation for the ones you have. You can receive the remaining vaccines once on-campus by visiting Tufts Medical’s Clinic for Collegiate Clinic for Wellness scheduling an appointment or attending an immunization clinic.
For medical and/or religious exemptions, please submit the Vaccination Declination Form.
To waive the Meningococcal Vaccine, which is only required for students 21 years of age or younger), please submit the MDPH Waiver.
All full-time students are required by Massachusetts law to be enrolled in a comprehensive health insurance plan. Students will automatically be enrolled in NEC’s Student Health Insurance Plan unless the plan is waived by August 29, 2025.
To be eligible to waive your student health insurance plan, you must be enrolled in a health insurance plan that meets the Massachusetts mandatory requirements. To find out if you qualify to waive your insurance, visit gallagherstudent.com/nec and review the FAQ document.
For more information on enrolling/waiving your student health insurance, visit the Student Billing page.
Information about the plan, with details about enrolling/waiving, will be mailed in July with your NEC bill.
Frequently Asked Questions
Students who are seriously injured or very sick and in need of emergency medical care should go to the nearest hospital emergency room immediately. There is no direct medical care available on campus.
In the case of life-threatening situations or where students are unable to transport themselves to the hospital, please dial 911. You can also call Public Safety at (617) 585.1777 (extension 1777 from any campus phone).
Please note: hospitals and ambulances are not appropriate for regular medical care. There is usually a long wait time at hospitals for non-urgent patients, and the expense is usually higher than if the patient is seen in a routine healthcare setting.
Students will find their insurance information through the Gallagher Portal via OneLogin. On the homepage, click Verification of Coverage showing Member ID and coverage period. Download or print this document to share with medical providers. The Gallagher Portal also provides answers to frequently asked questions, available benefits, vision and dental discounts, and estimated costs.
If you encounter any challenges after following any of the instructions above and need further support, you can call (617) 585.1284 or reach NEC’s Coordinator for Counseling and Wellness Ciya Bresilla at ciya.bresilla@necmusic.edu.
For a complete list of FAQs about the Student Health Insurance Plan, click here.
You are also welcome to stop by the Counseling and Wellness Center (SB 112) with any questions.
We recommend that each student establish care with a local provider while at NEC. Students who select a PCP (Primary Care Physician) at Tufts will be able to call for a same-day/next-day urgent care appointment. Call (617) 636.6006 to make an appointment and select Option 2 for NEC.
As NEC does not have direct healthcare on campus, anyone wishing to submit healthcare proxy documents should do so with a healthcare provider in Boston. Should students wish to establish care with NEC’s preferred medical provider, Tufts Medical Center, they should contact Tufts directly with their healthcare proxy questions.
As students who are 18 and older are legal adults in Massachusetts, students must make their own appointments and request any medical information on their own if a healthcare proxy has not been submitted.
