Recital: Zoe Murphy '22 MM, Jazz Trumpet
NEC's students meet one-on-one each week with a faculty artist to perfect their craft. As each one leaves NEC to make their mark in the performance world, they present a full, professional recital that is free and open to the public. It's your first look at the artists of tomorrow.
Zoe Murphy '22 MM studies Jazz Trumpet and has worked with Frank Carlberg, Miguel Zenón, and Jason Moran and is the recipient of a scholarship made possible by the Students House Scholarship Fund.
This performance is open to in-person audiences, and can also be viewed via livestream.

Program note
Ballot or the Bullet contains samples from Malcolm X’s speech, “Ballot or the Bullet.” The piece was written as a reaction to the George Floyd murder, the 2020 presidential election, as well as my experiences as a black woman in the United States.

Broken
PowerProgram note
Pink is an album that addresses the trauma and underlying identity issues of a bi-racial person living in America. The album is segmented into four parts with spoken word. The album begins with a prelude to part one, titled Prelude in Pink, to represent childlike happiness through innocence and minimalism. The first part, Pink, addresses the childlike confusion of being bi-racial. The second part, 2 Worlds, focuses on feeling internally split between two worlds and identities. The third section, Broken, represents the anger of being a person of color in America, and the fourth part, Power, represents empowerment through self-acceptance.
