Perkin Opera Scenes

Enjoy an evening of scenes which display the work that goes on daily in NEC's opera program, as faculty prepare student singers for performing careers.

This program will air again on Sunday, December 20 at 4:00 p.m.

The Perkin Opera Scenes are made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of longtime NEC supporter Winifred Perkin Gray and the Perkin Fund.

Winifred "Winnie" Perkin Gray is an important and valued member of the NEC and NEC Opera family. She is a former NEC Trustee and Overseer. Her generous support has made much music possible here at NEC.

Winnie graduated from Mt. Vernon Jr. College and is an alumna of the Thomas School in Rowayton, CT. Winnie herself is a soprano and has performed with the Syracuse and Indianapolis opera companies, the Connecticut Concert Opera, the Berkshire Choral Institute, and as a member of the Boston Academy of Music's ensemble.

The following performances feature graduate voice students currently enrolled at the New England Conservatory. This project is a remarkable feat of engineering, a miracle really. The singers you see and hear have been attending the Conservatory and participated in this project from various locations around the world. The challenges of recording sound from remote locations, using video taken on a variety of cameras from professional to iPhones, working in different time zones, rehearsing and filming with the restrictions put in place due to COVID, and learning to lip sync, on top of the usual challenges of preparing opera, has been exciting, overwhelming and inexplicably beautiful. We would be remiss not to thank Kathy Wittman for teaching all of us a little something about the art of filmmaking.
