Contemporary Improvisation + Tyshawn Sorey

NEC: Jordan Hall | Directions

290 Huntington Ave.
Boston, MA
United States

The concert culmination of a residency with Tyshawn Sorey: multi-instrumentalist, composer, and MacArthur “Genius”.

Featuring the entire Contemporary Improvisation department.

Thursday’s concert will include Sorey’s recent orchestral piece in honoring a pair of jazz legends, “For Bill Dixon and A. Spencer Barefield,” his chamber pieces “Inner Spectrum of Variables (Movement III)” and “For Fred Lerdahl,” his piano piece “Movement,” his noise project “LOUD,” featuring faculty member Joe Morris, and an NEC student ensemble playing his “Autoschediasms.”  It will also feature Sorey in a duo improvisational performance with NEC faculty member Anthony Coleman and excerpts from a Yiddish Theatre project featuring Sorey’s arrangements and orchestrations.

ABOUT TYSHAWN SOREY

A multi-instrumentalist, improviser, composer, ensemble leader, and conductor, Tyshawn Sorey is an ever-curious explorer of the nature of sound and rhythm, ensemble behavior, and the physicality of live performance. With his genre-free approach to making music and continuous experimentation, he has emerged as a singular talent in contemporary musical composition and performance.
