Beethoven Manuscript Expression Marks and the Missa Solemnis

In his Missa Solemnis, Beethoven used a very elaborate set of expression marks in the manuscript that do not appear in printed versions of the score. These markings are directly connected to the text of the Mass. A thorough understanding of the text and the markings can enhance our appreciation of the work and Beethoven’s approach to expressivity. During this presentation, Prof. Kitchen will explain Beethoven’s use of expression marks and will guide us through a recording of the entire Credo while following the manuscript score.
