Timothy E. Genis has been the principal timpanist of the Boston Symphony since 2003 and was the assistant timpanist/percussionist from 1993 to 2003. He is also the head of the Percussion Department at Boston University.
Prior to his appointment in Boston, he was the principal percussionist with the Honolulu Symphony and assistant timpanist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic. He has also performed with ensembles such as the Vienna Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Radio City Orchestra, and Rochester Philharmonic, among others.
Mr. Genis is a graduate of the Juilliard School and has studied with Roland Kohloff, Buster Bailey, Chris Lamb, Joe Morello, John Beck, and Anthony Cirone. An avid clinician, Tim has given master classes throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. He has developed a line of timpani and snare drum sticks, which are currently marketed by Vic Firth, Inc., and he also distributes his own line of sticks and educational materials through his company, Tim Genis, Inc. As a published author, Tim’s first book, Symphonic Repertoire of Percussion Accessories, was released in 2009.
