  1. Ludwig van Beethoven | Romance No. 2, op. 50

    Program note

    This is a piece originally composed for violin and orchestra, and it is transcribed for double bass by Franz Simandl. This piece is a beautiful and lyrical composition that was likely composed around 1798. It is in a single movement and follows a standard A-B-A-Coda which consists of two contrasting sections. Although it doesn’t have an explicit program or story associated with it, it’s a romantic and expressive work and it is known for its elegant and lyrical theme.

  2. Edward Tubin | Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra

    Allegro con moto

    Program note

     Eduard Tubin was an Estonian composed known for his contributions to 20th-century classical music. His Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra is a significant work for the double bass repertoire. This piece, composed in 1948, is a product of his mature period and is heavily influenced by neoclassical and romantic styles resulting in a work that is both lyrical and structurally well crafted. The concerto consists of three movements: an opening Allegro, a slow second movement, and a lively finale.

  4. Giovanni Bottesini | Grande Allegro di Concerto, "Alla Mendelssohn"

    Program note

     Giovanni Bottesini, an Italian composer and double bass virtuoso, is known for his contributions to the double bass repertoire. Bottesini composed “Alla Mendelssohn” during the 19th century, reflecting the romantic style of the period. It follows a fast-slow-fast structure, with the “Allegro” being the energetic and virtuosic opening introduction. It also uses many technical challenges, such as rapid passages, intricate fingerwork, and brilliant arpeggios

    Program note

    In this piece, there are seven movements. Anderson uses a humorous approach to compose it, which includes the low C extension and high harmonics. It also incorporates funk, jazz and blue styles.
