A deeply intelligent and sensitive pianist, Mitsuko Uchida has built up a reputation as a superlative performer of the works of Mozart, Schubert, Schumann and Beethoven. Her devotion to Alban Berg and Arnold Schoenberg has illuminated the piano music of these two composers and their place within the central repertoire.

Mitsuko Uchida has a long history of performing with the world’s most respected orchestras – Chicago Symphony, Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw, Bayerischer Rundfunk, London Symphony and London Philharmonic and recently celebrated her 100th concert with the Cleveland Orchestra. She has worked with many renowned conductors including Bernard Haitink, Mariss Jansons, Riccardo Muti, Sir Simon Rattle, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Vladimir Jurowski, Andris Nelsons and Gustavo Dudamel.

This masterclass is made possible by Edith Michelson Milender in honor of her mother Mildred Levinson ‘29.

Mildred completed a four-year program in two years and graduated from NEC with a diploma in Piano in June, 1929, receiving special honors in Fine Arts and English Literature. Upon graduation, she received a scholarship that allowed her to earn a post graduate Piano as a Soloist diploma from NEC in June, 1930. After NEC, Mildred held a successful career as both a performer on local radio and as a private piano teacher in the Boston area.  Mildred raised three children who grew up to appreciate their mother’s passion for classical music.
