The Merz Trio are currently the ensemble in residence in NEC's Professional Piano Trio Program. In this concert, they present their interdisciplinary work Those Secret Eyes in NEC's intimate and acoustically superb Plimpton Shattuck Black Box Theatre.

About Those Secret Eyes

A castle deserted. A story of desire and triumph on the brink of ruin and despair. A pocket of suspended time, measured out in sleepless, dreaming footsteps.

Written and performed by the Merz Trio, Those Secret Eyes revisits the story of Lady Macbeth through a combination of chamber performance, spoken text, and dance. Featuring original movement work from dance soloist Caroline Copeland (Lady Macbeth) and text from William Shakespeare, alongside a musical program of works by Brahms, Schumann, Verdi, Charlotte Bray, and Johannes Maria Staud.

Those Secret Eyes premiered before a sold out audience at the Kosciuszko Foundation in December, 2018. In 2019-2020, the show will also premiere at the Flynn Space in Burlington, VT, and at the Sheen Center in New York City.

Chamber Music in the Plimpton Shattuck Black Box

In this series, students perform side by side with faculty and other guest artists in NEC’s intimate Plimpton Shattuck Black Box Theatre. In the spirit of student-teacher collaborations at the Marlboro, Yellow Barn, and Ravinia festivals, this series celebrates the inherently collaborative and deeply relational nature of chamber music.
