Canceled: Eleonore Quartet: Honors Ensemble Recital

The Eleonore String Quartet was formed in 2017 at the New England Conservatory by four musicians hailing from all corners of the globe. The quartet originally comprised Canadian-French violinist Eva Aronian, British violinist Tatjana Roos, Russian-British violist Leonid Plashinov-Johnson, and Korean-American cellist Eunghee Cho. American-Canadian violist Luther Warren joined the quartet in 2018.

Coached during the 2017-18 season by esteemed cellist and teacher Laurence Lesser, the Eleonore String Quartet has already performed extensively throughout the Boston area, making its Jordan Hall debut in February 2018. In its current form and now under the guidance of distinguished violist and pedagogue Kim Kashkashian, the quartet was selected in November 2018 as one of NEC’s chamber music honors ensembles.

During the 2018-19 season, the Eleonore String Quartet will make further appearances in the
greater Boston area and beyond, with recital programs at Jordan Hall, Martha’s Vineyard, and the Mellon Music Festival in Davis, California. Members of the Eleonore String Quartet have appeared at such festivals as Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute, Yellow Barn, the Perlman Music Program’s Chamber Music Workshop, Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival’s Winter Workshop, IMS Prussia Cove, Verbier Festival Academy, the Kronberg Academy, the Pablo Casals Festival, the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the Taos School of Music, and the International Holland Music Sessions, as well as at concert series such as the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Caramoor Music Center’s Evnin Rising Stars, ChamberFest Cleveland, Tippet Rise Art Center, Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival, the Dilijan Chamber Music Series, Ottawa Chamberfest, and the Schubert Club of St. Paul. They have collaborated with such artists as Midori Goto, Kim Kashkashian, David Shifrin, Colin Carr, Robert McDonald, Laurence Lesser, Ida Kavafian, Steven Tenenbom, Roger Tapping, Hsin-Yun Huang, Jon Manasse, Anthony Marwood, the Borromeo String Quartet, A Far Cry, and the East Coast Chamber Orchestra (ECCO).

Advocates of an evolving musical tradition, the Eleonore String Quartet’s members have also worked with composers Joan Tower, Jörg Widmann, Aaron Jay Kernis, and Kati Agócs on performances of recent and new music.

Violinist Eva Aronian plays on a c. 1700 Giovanni Tononi violin on loan from the Canada Council for the Arts. Tatjana Roos plays a G.B. Guadagnini (“ex-Kavakos”) violin of c.1785, made possible by a London benefactor in arrangement with Florian Leonhard Fine Violins. Luther Warren performs on a 1767 José Massaguer viola loaned to him by Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute. Eunghee Cho plays on a 1930 Anselmo Gotti cello on loan from the Colburn Foundation.

The Eleonore String Quartet is named after Eleonore von Breuning, Beethoven’s first love. Outside of the concert hall, its members share a passion for art, literature, and good food.
