Haydn, Liebermann, Saint-Saëns

In the String Trio in G major, Op. 53, No. 1, Haydn contrasts a pleasant and docile first movement with an energetic presto. His well known penchant for musical humor is demonstrated throughout, as he includes a few musical surprises for the audience.

Clarinet Sonata by Lowell Liebermann, one of America’s most frequently performed and recorded living composers, is written for BCMS clarinetist Romie de Guise-Langlois and co-commissioned by the Boston Chamber Music Society.

Saint-Saëns almost single-handedly attempted to make the case for chamber music during a time when the French only seemed interested in opera. His Piano Quartet in B-flat major received great acclaim at its premiere and has earned its place in the standard repertoire.
