Situational Analysis

In order to realize the vision for NEC, it is essential to know where we stand at the beginning of the planning process. In other words, we need to know the characteristics of the institution at Point A, if we are to get to Point B.

Therefore, Management Consultants for the Arts conducted a situational analysis of the Conservatory. This study incorporated the findings of the original Steering Committee, augmented by material drawn from the eight Task Forces, discussions by the Board of Trustees and Board of Overseers, and 20 one-on-one interviews conducted by the consultant mainly with trustees and faculty. The findings were cast in a classic analysis that identifies Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats, otherwise known as SWOT.

-Increase Tuition Discount rate for College, Preparatory School
-Redevelop campus and expand facilities to improve student experience
-Expand marketing and PR resources to enhance visibility, concert attendance
-Expand technological capacity for educational, customer service benefits
-Expand Preparatory School and Continuing Education to generate income
-Enhance and generate partnerships including El Sistema program


-Relatively low tuition discount rate for College, Preparatory School
-Aging buildings, under-resourced facilities
-Historically low investment in marketing/PR
-Slow adoption of technology
-NEC partnerships not fully developed
-Preparatory, Continuing Education not as fully developed as could be


-Global economic turmoil could negatively affect enrollment, fundraising
-Faculty and student acquisition and retention
-Prevailing popular culture marginalizes what we do at NEC
