Tribute to a Choral Legacy
Erica Washburn conducts the NEC Chamber Singers, graduate choral conducting students Suzanne Jalbert and B. Darrel Whidden conduct the NEC Concert Choir, in this tribute to Tamara Brooks (1941–2012), who led NEC's choruses from 1989 through 2000.
Much of the repertoire performed tonight was also programmed by Brooks during her time at NEC, including a reprise of a work by alumnus Lior Navok, Meditations over Shore, that Brooks premiered and recorded here.
Washburn notes:
As Tamara was an advocate for new music, we will also give the Boston premiere of a new work by Anthony Maglione—"Set me as a seal"—for quartet, large choir, and flute. It is set in both English and Hebrew, and I think an appropriate homage to Tamara's passion for new music, and, the enduring love she and her husband, Theodore Bikel, shared—which I have heard so very much about
