Rebecca Shrimpton has been acclaimed as “a simply exquisite vocalist” for “her mastery of the art of singing” and “nearly perfect control and truly expressive depth.” (All About Jazz; All Music Guide; All About Jazz Italia) Her CD, Madman’s Moon, with guitarist Eric Hofbauer, garnered international praise, earning a four-star review from the All Music Guide and making the Top Ten CDs of 2005 lists of Jazz Times and Canadian radio station CHUO FM. Her latest CD, Wallflower in the Amazon, features music by composer Darrell Katz, with blues legend Mike Finnigan from Jimi Hendrix' Electric Ladyland. The 2009 release, Requited, features new songs by internationally best-selling novelist Anita Diamant (The Red Tent) and pianist Bert Seager, with Rick DiMuzio, tenor sax, Jorge Roeder, bass, and Richie Barshay, drums.
Shrimpton has appeared with Joe Lovano, Steve Lacy, Oliver Lake, George Russell, Ran Blake, and George Lewis, and is vocalist for Boston’s 18-piece Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra, with whom she has recorded five CDs. Gaining a reputation as a composer’s singer, Rebecca has performed new works with Darrell Katz, Laura Andel, Daniel Felsenfeld, among others, as well as her own compositions, one of which debuted with luminary bassist Cecil McBee and singer Roberta Gambarini. She has also been featured on two PBS/NPR concert broadcasts and recordings, performing alongside singer/actor Theodore Bikel.
Shrimpton has extensive training and performance history as both a jazz vocalist and a classical mezzo soprano. As a voice teacher, she embraces jazz, modern classical, blues, R&B, gospel, folk, country, and pop, while providing instruction in healthful vocal technique, improvisation, development of individual sound/style, repertoire, theory and ear training.
