7pm: Pre-Concert Q & A with John Zorn
8pm: Concert

Curated by John Zorn and Anthony Coleman, the concert, sponsored by NEC’s Contemporary Improvisation Department, will include NEC’s faculty, students, and ensembles.

Repertoire will be drawn from Zorn projects that span 35 years of work and a wide variety of musical idioms. With a generous sampling of less familiar titles, tonight's program will include music associated with Zorn's early Naked City rock band (founded in 1988) as well as new works premiered as recently as last month.

Anthony Coleman and Stephen Drury, among the NEC faculty who have coached the students performing tonight, have deep relationships with Zorn's music on stage and in the recording studio. Among many other Zorn projects on which he has played, Coleman is an original member of the Cobra ensemble, and now teaches this game piece at NEC. Drury has recorded key works that established Zorn's still-emerging face as a writer of composed music that takes classical forms as a jumping-off point.

Ensembles participating include Survivors' Breakfast, Cobra Ensemble, Masada ensemble, Hockey ensemble (all coached by Anthony Coleman), Ted Reichman Ensemble, CI Madrigal Ensemble (coached by Eden MacAdam Somer)and the Callithumpian Consort (directed by Stephen Drury).

During the concert, NEC president Tony Woodcock will present Zorn with an honorary Doctor of Music degree.
