An Ambitious Program for a New Facility
New England Conservatory's new Student Life and Performance Center will provide students and faculty with state-of-the-art facilities commensurate with our standing as a world-class school of music and performance center. As such, it will accommodate the needs for rehearsal, lesson, practice, and classroom space of our resident students as well as the nonresident students participating in Preparatory and Continuing Education programs.
- The Center will place a College student residence atop a student life complex.
- It will include a new state-of-the-art library, where our collections will have a safe and accessible home and research can be done with all the benefits of interactive technology.
- The Center will house an Opera Studio with backstage and dressing rooms, an orchestra rehearsal room, and large ensemble room.
- The student residence will have 252 student beds, a dining hall, and a commons area.
"The new building will dramatically change the NEC experience for the school's students and faculty, will enhance the image of the Conservatory in Boston and beyond, and will be something for all alumni to be very proud of."--Deborah Bennett Elfers '82
The Project’s beginnings and timeline going forward:
Several years ago, NEC engaged in an extensive Master Planning process involving all constituencies of the Conservatory family and predicated on the need to work within and to optimize our existing footprint of real estate. The resulting plan set forth an ambitious program that has been the foundation of the design renedered with great imagination by our architects, Ann Beha Architects/Gensler.
That design received enthusiastic endorsement by our neighbors as part of the City of Boston ‘s permitting process and in July 2012 we received the go-ahead to proceed.
NEC has contracted with Tishman Construction to build the project and hopes to break ground in spring 2015. According to the current timeline, the Student Life and Performance Center will open in fall 2017, coinciding with the celebration of the Conservatory’s 150th anniversary!
We are gratified by the enthusiasm and confidence shown by early donors to the project and we are optimistic that we will reach our goal and complete this exciting building on schedule. To support this Initiative, click the button.
