The NEC Summer Piano Institute celebrates the sesquicentennial (150th birthday) of Claude-Achilles Debussy. The weekend intensive will focus on Debussy’s music as well as the music of French composers both who influenced him and whom he influenced. In addition Debussy we will explore works of Saint-Saëns, Fauré, Ravel, Satie, and Mompou, among others. We will look at Debussy’s incorporation of World Music into his art and his reach into Jazz and Modernism.
Debussy and his World continues a series of summer Piano Institutes that began in 2007 with The Piano Music of Schumann and Brahms, followed by The Piano Music of Frederic Chopin in 2008, Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn in 2009, Clara and Robert Schumann in 2010, and Franz Liszt and his Circle in 2011. The institute brings together pianists, piano teachers, and musicologists interested in synthesizing new scholarship, historical performance practice, and historical recordings to inform their playing, teaching, and interpretation. The composer-immersion format provides a forum for professionals, teachers, adult students, and advanced high-school students. There will be opportunities for close study, practice and exposure to the entire range of music by Debussy and his followers. Faculty will give presentations on various aspects of the works of Debussy including performance traditions, historical interpretive approaches, and analysis of early recordings of performers from the Golden Age. Sessions will stress current topics in recent French Music scholarship and its relevance for the pianist and piano teacher. The weekend culminates with a recital by the participants.
