In 1993, NEC students and staff joined forces with community members to address a shared interest in singing in a first-rate Gospel ensemble that performs in a variety of venues well beyond the traditional church setting. The NEC Community Gospel Choir was born. As an auditioned course/ensemble, the Gospel Choir offers its members the unique opportunity to study basic musicianship and a precursory history of Gospel music as well as to learn and perform a wide range of this music rooted in a traditional African-American, southern-based aesthetic which has evolved into urban-based contemporary repertoire. The choir’s entire musical stance is in Gospel as a grand celebration of the human spirit, rather than simply artistic performance or entertainment. This Ensemble is open to all from within and without NEC! Note: to receive credit for large ensembles, students must attend all rehearsals and participate in all scheduled performances.
