Prescreening Requirements

Beginning with applications for 2012 entry, all percussion applicants who wish to perform a live audition must submit a prescreening video recording by December 1st. Please refer to the Recording Guidelines section for information about required recording formats. 

Undergraduate

Snare

  • Delecluse Etude No. 1 from 12 Etudes
  • Long orchestral roll from pp to ff and down to ppp, totaling 30 seconds and staying at ff for 4 seconds

Mallets

  • Two-mallet solo of your choice
  • Four-mallet solo of your choice from the 20th or 21st century

Timpani

  • Etude from Carter or Delecluse or comparable
  • Excerpt from Beethoven Symphony No. 9 first movement, coda (Measure 513 to the end of first mvmt.)
  • Long roll from p to ff to pp on high F, totaling 30 seconds

Master of Music and Graduate Diploma

Snare

  • Select etude of choice from Delecluse 12 etudes
  • Demonstration of an Orchestral roll from ff to mf to pp, decrescendo - total length 20 seconds
  • Excerpts:
    - Prokofiev-Kije, Rehearsal No. 1-2
    - Rimsy-Korsakov-Scheherezade: Movement 3, Rehearsal Letter D-E; Movement 4, Rehearsal Letter P-U

Mallets

  • Advanced solo from standard repertoire (including a 2 mallet work and 4 mallet work)
  • Excerpts:
    - Stravinsky-Firebird Suite, measures 127-133
    - Schumann-Symphony No. 3, measures 230-245
    - Gershwin-Porgy & Bess, Opening

Timpani

  • Advanced solo from standard repertoire (eg. Carter Delecleuse)
  • Excerpts:
    - Beethoven-Symphony No.9 First Movement, coda
    - Tchaikovsky-Symphony No. 4 First Movement, two measures before rehearsal letter T-U
    - Beethoven-Symphony No. 1 Menuette, both entrances without repeats

Live Audition Requirements

Undergraduate

Applicants should prepare a solo in each of four categories:

  • Snare
  • 2 Mallet
  • 4 Mallet
  • Timpani 

The mallet selections should be chosen for musical content and technical difficulty.  Applicants may also be asked to demonstrate scales and arpeggios.  The snare drum selection should clearly demonstrate your level of technical ability.  Rudiments and orchestral rolls at different dynamics may be asked as well.  Applicants should be prepared to sight-read on any instrument.

Graduate

Applicants should demonstrate a high level of performance on timpani, mallets (two and four mallets) and snare drum. Be prepared to play an advanced solo in each category as well as up to 4 excerpts from the standard repertoire in each category.
