Applications to the Musicology program are accepted at the graduate level only. The only exception made is for current NEC undergraduate performance or composition majors, who may apply during their second year to transfer into the Music History major for their third and fourth years. We do not accept undergraduate transfer students from outside institutions into the Music History major.

There is no audition as part of the Musicology admission process. Instead, applicants must submit at least three research papers demonstrating superior writing ability and a strong interest in historical subjects. All research papers can be uploaded as a part of our online application. Additionally, applicants are strongly encouraged to set up an interview with the Musicology department after the application has been submitted and before the end of February. Applicants may contact the Office of Admission for assistance in setting up an interview date. While an interview is not mandatory, the opportunity to meet with an applicant and discuss his/her musical and historical interests can be very helpful for the Musicology faculty as a supplement to its review of the submitted research papers.
