Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency.

Most applicants prove proficiency through the TOEFL or IELTS exams. An official score report should be submitted by January 1, even if the score does not yet met NEC's established minimums; this will provide time to prepare and retake exams before the final deadline of March 1. No offer of admission will be made until English proficiency has been demonstrated.

Minimum Scores:

Undergraduate programs: TOEFL 61 iBT; IELTS 6.0
Graduate programs: TOEFL 79 iBT; IELTS 6.5

Official score reports should be sent directly to NEC (ETS school code: 3659). Copies or student score reports are not acceptable. Scores must be from tests taken within two years of the application deadline.

Exemption from the examination requirement:

Applicants who will have completed a full-time degree program at a U.S. college or university or a diploma at a U.S. high school are automatically considered for a waiver of the exam requirement based on a review of submitted transcripts. NEC reserves the right to require additional information, if needed.

Applicants who will have completed a full-time degree program at a non-U.S. college or university where English is the language of instruction may request an exemption from the exam requirement after submitting an application. The request should be a written statement of at least 100 words describing your experience with the English language and the reasons you are qualified to begin studies at NEC without submitting a TOEFL or IETLS score. Requests will not be reviewed until we have received your completed application and transcript(s).
