Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency.
Most applicants prove proficiency through the TOEFL or IELTS exams. Official score reports must be received no later than March 1 (Conducting applicants must submit scores by December 1). No offer of admission will be made until English proficiency has been demonstrated.
Undergraduate programs: TOEFL 61 iBT; IELTS 6.0
Graduate programs: TOEFL 79 iBT; IELTS 6.5
Official score reports should be sent directly to NEC (ETS school code: 3659). Copies and student score reports are not acceptable. Scores must be from tests taken within two years of the application deadline.
DMA applicants do not need to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores.
Exemption from the examination requirement: Applicants who have completed a full-time, 4-year degree program at an English-speaking college/university or high school may request an exemption from the exam requirement after they have submitted an application. The request should be a written statement of at least 100 words describing your experience with the English language and the reasons you believe you are qualified to begin studies at NEC without submitting a TOEFL score. TOEFL waiver requests should be sent to the admissions counselor who works with your intended degree or major as shown on our Contact Admissions page. Requests must be initiated by the applicant and will not be reviewed until we have received your completed application and transcript(s).
