What do you like about studying at NEC?
“I became interested in NEC as I wanted to study with my current teacher, John Ferrillo, who is principal oboist of the Boston Symphony. A school that had a strong performance-based emphasis and good orchestral program was important to me as well. I was also looking for a school that gives individual attention to students. The program I’m currently enrolled in, the Graduate Diploma, is very performance-oriented. My favorite thing about NEC is the amazing performances in which I get to participate. NEC's orchestral department provides students like me with invaluable experience working under world-class conductors in a stimulating environment. The concerts in Jordan Hall are always well-supported and attended. I love the interaction that takes place between performer and listener.”
What do you like about Boston and like to do with your free time?
“I think Boston is a great place to be as a musician; it's a big city with lots of concerts to attend and the cultural tradition is mixed with the interesting history in the city. I learn a lot from hearing concerts with the Boston Symphony frequently. In addition to practicing, I spend hours making reeds! I also enjoy baking, needlework, history, and being involved in my church's music ministry and my Bible study group.”
Can you think of a particular moment or experience at NEC that was memorable?
“I will always remember winning the NEC/Boston Pops Competition and getting the amazing opportunity to perform a concerto with the Boston Pops in Symphony Hall this past May.”
What kind of impact has NEC had on you?
“NEC has given me the opportunity to grow musically with teachers, mentors, and fellow students who have challenged me to improve. I am very grateful for the diligent instructors at NEC who dedicate themselves to assist students like myself and help them to discover how to be their own teachers.”
