For her 25th exercise in honoring cultural anniversaries with concerts by NEC faculty, alumni, and guests, Tatyana Dudochkin of the NEC Preparatory School piano faculty looks back at some of the highlights of composers and works celebrated in past concerts.

On tonight's concert, NEC Youth Symphony conductor Steven Karidoyanes leads performances of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and opera excerpts featuring the Masterworks Chorale and soloist Mikhail Svetlov. Magdalena Richter leads a unison of violins in the Romance from Shostakovich's The Gadfly.

In addition to NEC artists performing on tonight's program, we welcome returning guest artists Mikhail Svetlov, bass star from the Metropolitan Opera and Bolshoi Theater; soprano Yelena Dudochkin Berry; and WGBH radio announcer Ron Della Chiesa as host.

There's also a nod to the current Scriabin anniversary year (1872-1915) with an appearance by his great-grandson, Elisha Abas, as soloist in Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Abas will also perform a solo Scriabin work.
