Elise Seymour, vocalist, music educator, and special education advocate, graduated in 2011 with a B.A. in Music Education and Spanish. After completing her undergraduate studies, Elise worked as the Education Assistant for the Charlotte Symphony serving as both coordinator and teaching artist for the El Sistema-inspired program at Winterfield Elementary. Additionally, she developed a storytelling and composition based curriculum in partnership with the Charlotte Symphony, Opera Carolina, North Carolina Dance Theatre, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system.
In 2012, Elise was selected as a Sistema Fellow at the New England
Conservatory where she explored the unifying effects of music in a variety of communities researching and inquiring the ways in which music be used as a tool for social action. During her residency in Venezuela, Elise spent the majority of her time working in the special education programs. She not only taught in several of the inclusive music programs but also dedicated time to researching the influence this program had on the students and their families.
After the fellowship, Elise returned to Charlotte, North Carolina as an elementary music teacher. For the next several years, Elise taught throughout the public and charter school systems continuing her passion of bringing music education to every child in classrooms that reach every learner.
Currently, Elise is pursuing her Masters in Arts In Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. After several years in the elementary music classroom, Elise recognized her desire to return to graduate school to explore special education policies, arts education pedagogies, inclusive education frameworks, and entrepreneurial leadership. After graduation, Elise hopes to obtain a position in curriculum design developing intentional arts programs that foster inclusive experiences for all students.
