NEC Alumni Win Grow Your Art Grants During Maria Schneider Residency
Grow Your Art grants totaling $13,500 have been awarded to NEC alumni Emily Eng, Darynn Dean, Rafael Natan, and Linda Numagami, and will support a microgrant program for Black, Latinx, and Native American music students, a series of concerts and film screenings around women in jazz, an accessible School of Arts and Social Justice, and a clarinet festival.

Composer and bandleader Maria Schneider comes to New England Conservatory for an artist residency March 2-4, in which she will work in person with students in the jazz department, and offer online events which are open to the general public. This is the fourth year that NEC's Black Student Union has honored Coretta Scott King, a 1954 graduate of the school who met her husband, Martin Luther King Jr., while studying in Boston. This year's celebration takes the form of an hourlong digital concert on Thursday, February 25, titled “Continuation of a Dream: Requiem.”

Today’s Google Doodle celebrates the 145th birthday Zitkala-Ša, a writer, musician, teacher, composer, suffragist, and member of the Yankton Sioux Tribe of South Dakota (Ihanktonwan Dakota Oyate or “People of the End Village”), who studied at New England Conservatory from 1897 – 1899.
