Orchestra playing string instruments.

Develop impeccable technique across a breadth of repertoire as a string player at NEC. String students receive studio instruction from one of the world’s most distinguished faculties and collaborate with equally passionate and dedicated peers. Performance opportunities are numerous, with an expansive range of repertoire and genres—solo and concerto performances, chamber music, masterclasses, and orchestra concerts, as well as opportunities throughout Boston’s rich musical community.

From the Department Chairs

Lluis Claret Serra and Kristopher Tong.

Hello, and a warm welcome to NEC! It is our great pleasure and privilege to write on behalf of the String Department, whose faculty and students comprise some of the very best and brightest musicians in the world and whose aim is to continue to foster in our community the highest standards of artistry; to empower our students to continue and revitalize the tradition of our musical heritage through their work to come. We have a very special community here at NEC, where the accomplishments and careers of our faculty speak for themselves but also where our shared values create the space for a student to come not just to improve as a player but to find their voice and to discover for themselves what is essential in their art as they move forward into the world.

    NEC Chamber Orchestra

The NEC Chamber Orchestra, NEC’s conductorless orchestra, was founded in 2000 by double bassist Donald Palma, a founding member of Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Music of the classical orchestra era by Handel, Haydn, and Mozart is at the core of virtually every program, along with an occasional baroque work and modern works for chamber orchestra — including this piece, “Chagall’s Mandolins,” by CMA department chair Hankus Netsky.
