The NEC Preparatory School offers a rich array of Large Ensembles for instrumental students with varying degrees of experience and virtuosity on their instruments.

The orchestra program includes: Four full orchestras, with winds, brass, percussion, and string players; four large string orchestras; and String Chamber Orchestra. All of these groups are listed below. Click on the links to find out more information about individual groups.

All of the orchestras usually perform at least twice each year in NEC's Jordan Hall. Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (YPO), and Youth Symphony (YS) are both touring ensembles. In June 2013, YPO toured to Argentina and YS toured to Costa Rica. YPO and YS will tour again in June 2015.
Not sure which level is best for you? Don't worry! Orchestra auditions are not held for specific orchestras. Students are placed into an orchestra based on their audition.

At NEC Prep, we have 3 wind ensembles, separated by age group. Click on the links to find out more information about individual ensembles.
- Junior Massachusetts Wind Ensemble (Jr. MYWE) - grades 7-10
- Senior Massachusetts Wind Ensemble (Sr. MYWE) - grades 10-12
- MYWE Concert Band (MYWE CB) - grades 7-12
Sr. MYWE is a touring ensemble. In June 2014, Sr. MYWE will tour to Ireland. Sr. MYWE will tour again in June 2016.

Learn ensemble playing from Cleveland Orchestra veteran and brass pedagogue, Eli Epstein. With his upbeat, positive approach to music making, Epstein provides experiences that promote high levels of musicianship, enhance brass playing technique, develop listening skills, encourage emotional expression and address interpersonal and performance issues. This fun, energizing ensemble experience is open by audition to high school and middle school brass players.

The Preparatory School Trombone Choir offers a special opportunity for young trombonists to expand their musicality, technique, and ensemble skills under the guidance of Norman Bolter, former BSO trombonist and renowned brass pedagogue. This ensemble is open to intermediate and advanced trombone players.

NEC Preparatory School offers an array of Baroque Ensembles, consisting of up to 20 members each, which play music composed before 1750. Students play on modern instruments, but learn about Baroque technique and aesthetic. The more advanced ensembles offer some members the opportunity to solo with the orchestra, and have masterclasses each year with performers who specialize in baroque performance.
