In honor of Juneteenth, New England Conservatory commemorates the spirit of liberation, resilience, and creativity of Black Americans. We recognize the many ways NEC's Black alumni community members have brought music to the world and opened the doors for others through their passion and exceptional artistry.  One such NEC community member was J. Rosamund Johnson, a Black artist and civil rights advocate who attended NEC in 1893. Johnson composed "Lift Every Voice and Sing," widely recognized as the Black National Anthem.

Vocal Performance major and leader of NEC's Queer Student Union Molly Knight ’25 has used her position to create welcoming spaces on campus for NEC's LGBTQIA+ community, from developing a Gay Library within the CEB office to coordinating a panel of NEC students, faculty, and staff to share their experiences of being queer in music. Knight, a talented classical soprano studying with faculty member MaryAnn McCormick, reflects on her NEC experience, looks ahead to her final year and post-grad goals, and shares her best advice for incoming students.

Whether performing with the Gospel Ensemble, hosting events for the Center for Cultural Equity and Belonging, or songwriting with this spring's electronic-inspired CMA Honors Ensemble, redbird, Yifei Zhou ’22, ’24 MM has been deeply engrained within NEC's community since her first undergraduate semester. Having just graduated with her Master of Music, she reflects on her musical growth at NEC and the people and experiences that shaped this formative time.
Haoyu Zheng

Meet Haoyu Zheng ’24, a Composition and CMA double major, a Teaching Fellow through NEC's CPP office, and a mentee of Grammy-winner Stephanie Economou ’12 through the EM Mentorship Program. After graduation next month, Zheng will travel to Los Angeles to work as a composer assistant in Nathan Wang's studio before moving to Baltimore in the fall to start his Master's in film scoring at the Peabody Institute, where he earned a full scholarship.

Tenor Josaphat Contreras ’22 MM has won a 2024-25 Fulbright-García Robles grant to study mariachi at the National Mariachi Conservatory in Mexico City. Contreras graduated from New England Conservatory with a Master of Music in Vocal Pedagogy, where he was chosen as the commencement speaker for his graduating class of 2022.

In an insightful reflection, NEC voice faculty member J.J. Penna shared his reactions to March's Liederabend performance, This is the Place - Voices of Exile and Exodus. Curated by Tanya Blaich and featuring NEC student vocalists and pianists, this Liederabend explored displacement through the voices of travelers, immigrants, and refugees across the ages.
