The Warmth of Singing Together: NEC Chamber Singers

NEC’s choral program a shining example of artistry and collaboration

If you’ve ever sung a carol with a group of loved ones or strangers, you probably felt it: the special power that arises from many voices singing together — each voice holding its own, yet blending to create a sound that is larger than any one singer.

The NEC Chamber Singers know this power well, and cultivate it at the highest artistic level. Now celebrating its 75th year, the NEC choral program has cultivated impeccable musicianship alongside a special feeling of community, collaboration, and creativity for generations, and welcomes audiences to a special holiday concert on Monday, December 12.

Chenzhejun “Jackie” Hu ’24 MM cherishes her time with NEC Chamber Singers as “the best experience I’ve had in the U.S.—it’s a big warm family, and each rehearsal is full of joy.”

Open not just to voice students, but to all majors, NEC choruses — the Chamber Singers and the Concert Choir — are a centerpiece of the NEC community and educational experience for generations of students.

Maggie Storm ’24 came to NEC specifically because of the reputation of the Chamber Singers, saying that she was “blown away by their musicianship” while touring schools. “Now, I am lucky enough to collaborate with these amazing singers every day.”

“It is a beautiful feeling to collaborate with singers that are so passionate, dedicated, and focused. Each person comes to rehearsal prepared and ready to make beautiful music, which gives us the freedom to think creatively and make stylistic choices that wouldn’t be possible if not for everyone’s individual hard work. I’ve also made connections with my fellow members, opening up opportunities throughout different areas of the school.”

Founded in 1947 by influential pioneer Lorna Cooke deVaron, and now led by Director of Choral Activities Erica Washburn, the NEC choruses have always been about joyful rigor, with a sense of community that underpins the choruses’ dedication to music-making at the highest level.

“Being surrounded by singers as talented as the Chamber Singers is such a privilege,” shares Calvin Wamser ’24 MM. “Music, and singing in particular, is such a personal experience just as much as an intellectual one, so building community around this ensemble has made the music-making process so fulfilling.”

The Chamber Singers are especially thrilled to share their annual festive holiday concert alongside the Symphonic Winds and Navy Band Northeast, welcoming all to witness the powerful community at the heart of the NEC experience.
