Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) is a Black, Haitian-American composer, violinist, educator, and social entrepreneur. His work often centers on collaboration among artists, institutions, and communities. He is an associate and institute professor at Arizona State University’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts and a senior artist at SOZO Media. Daniel’s work spans chamber, orchestral, opera, television, film, theater, and dance. He composed music for the film Ailey (Sundance official selection) and served as music director and principal composer for the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company. His music has been presented by institutions including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Sydney Opera House, the Kennedy Center, the Dutch National Opera, and the American Composers Orchestra.
Daniel is a Creative Capital grantee, Hermitage Artist Retreat fellow, and Civitella Ranieri Music Fellow. His honors include the American Academy in Rome Goddard Lieberson Fellowship, two regional Emmy Awards, the National Sawdust Disruptor Award, and the Sphinx Organization’s Arthur L. Johnson Award. He served on the board of the Association of Performing Arts Professionals, including as vice chair, and currently serves on the board of the League of American Orchestras. Daniel earned his doctorate from the University of Michigan and his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University.
Daniel is a Fellow of the inaugural cohort of the Michael D. Eisner Arts & Culture Fellowship and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
