On Friday, September 26, the lights of Jordan Hall will rise on an unprecedented musical event as four pianists of extraordinary international stature, bound by a rare lineage of teacher and student, perform together for the first time: Yunchan Lim ’26 AD, the youngest gold medalist of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition; Minsoo Sohn, Lim’s mentor; Wha Kyung Byun, legendary pianist and teacher, and Evren Ozel ’17 Prep, ’21, ’23 MM, ’25 AD, Cliburn Competition bronze medalist and Byun’s present protégé.
NEC will provide complimentary tickets to the showcase to more than 150 young music students from associated programs, including Boston Arts Academy, Project STEP, Conservatory Lab Charter School, the Epiphany School, the Handel and Haydn Society, the Newman School, and the Walnut Hill School of the Arts.
“This performance is not just a concert — it is the living embodiment of how artistry is cultivated and passed forward from teacher to student to society,” New England Conservatory President Andrea Kalyn said. “In one evening, audiences will experience the brilliance of world-renowned artists who were shaped by the profound impact of their NEC mentors. We are delighted to invite students from our Preparatory School and associated programs to provide a special opportunity for the next generation to enjoy this stunning performance.”
For decades, Byun has been considered one of the most influential piano teachers in the world. Her students win the highest honors in international competitions.
“My teacher, Russell Sherman, taught me that music is a journey of self-discovery, where we explore with curiosity and stir the soul without ever losing our sense of wonder,” Byun said. “I have continued this quest through my own teaching, striving to pass on the mission of elevating the artistic spirit and contributing to humanity. I’ve learned even more from my students. To share this stage with three generations is an experience that leaves me truly elated.”
Though each artist stands alone in global prominence, this performance marks a unique occasion in which students and their teachers will return to Jordan Hall for a historic performance.
