Harold Shapiro

Former Boston Symphony Horn player and administrator as well as NEC faculty member from 1965-1979.

Harold Shapiro’s History
Harry Shapiro was a French horn player that was born and raised in the Boston area by Russian immigrant parents, Max and Sarah Shapiro. He was born into a musical family with his father, a professional horn player, and his brother, Oscar, an antiquarian music collector and dealer. Harry attended Boston Latin School, followed by the Juilliard School of Music and then began his career in 1937 playing with his father in the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1941, he married Frances Kidd, and the couple had two daughters. During the years of World War II, Shapiro was drafted and served as a member of the Army Air Force band where he was stationed in England and performed all across Europe. Harry was a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra until he retired from performing in 1976. However, Harry continued working for the Boston Symphony in an administrative capacity serving as Assistant Personnel Manager, Transportation Manager, and manager of the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra. Alongside his horn playing, Harry also mentored and taught multiple young musicians. Remembered by his passion for music and dedication to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Harry died in 2014 at the age of 100.
