Daniel Steiner

Born in 1933 in Mount Vernon, New York, Daniel Steiner grew up in New York City before attending Harvard University, where he received his A.B. (magna cum laude) in 1954 from Harvard College.

He later studied at the University of London for a year and earned his LL.B. from Harvard Law School in 1958, and served as a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserves.

Daniel Steiner’s History

Steiner practiced Law in New York City for five years, and later went on to hold positions with both the U.S. State Department as well as the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission. In 1970, he was appointed the first general counsel for Harvard University, a position that he held for more than twenty years. During his time at Harvard, he also held the office of Vice President from 1982 to 1992.

His relationship with New England Conservatory began in 1994 when he became an overseer; he joined the Board of Trustees in 1995. By 1999, Steiner was serving as Acting President of the Conservatory and in 2000, he became the conservatory’s first non-musician president. He held the office until 2006, when he stepped down for health reasons. Steiner’s presidency was characterized by a focus on institutional and educational excellence, with the goal of placing NEC at the forefront of conservatories. During Steiner’s tenure, NEC experienced a 70% rise in student applications. Through the Capital Campaign, begun in 2003 under Steiner’s direction, the conservatory aimed to raise $100 million, $72 million of which was raised before the end of his presidency in 2006. That same year, Steiner passed away from health complications.

Archival Collection

The Daniel Steiner Papers consist of approximately 12 lin. ft. (11 record cartons and one smaller archival box), organized into 12 series. The collection comprises paper files, photographs, audio and visual recordings, and textiles.

This collection was generated by Daniel Steiner during his tenure as President of NEC from 2001-2006. After Steiner’s presidency, these materials were transferred from the President’s Office to the NEC Archives.

Access to the Steiner Papers is granted by the Archivist. Appointments must be scheduled in advance. There are restrictions pertaining to this collection as determined by the Archivist and the Office of the President.

The Daniel Steiner collection is organized into the following twelve series:

The Correspondence series is arranged alphabetically by the last name of the corresponding party, and includes correspondence between Steiner and NEC faculty, community partners, government officials, and musicians. The files span the years from 1994 to 2006. Included in this series is one additional folder of memoranda issued by Steiner during his presidency.

The Academic Files include files related to academic departments at NEC, and are arranged alphabetically by department name. While the majority of files in this series pertain directly to one academic department, one additional folder of general academic information is also included.

Administrative Files are arranged alphabetically by topic or department, and include files generated during institutional planning and day-to-day activities in administrative departments, such as the Provost’s Office and Finance and Administration office. Several studies and assessments of institutional functioning and progress are also included in this series. Information regarding admissions statistics and finances are included as well. This series also includes a printed copy of the New England Conservatory Standards as of 2005.

The Committee Records are comprised of meeting minutes, correspondence, and governance documents from NEC committees including the Faculty and Staff Issues Committees, the Curriculum Review Committee, and the Faculty Council. All files in this series were generated between 1995 and 2006. Records in this series are arranged alphabetically by committee name.

The Faculty Files include both general faculty files, presented first in the series, as well as individual faculty files. The former includes records pertaining to faculty contract negotiations, the Faculty Professional Development Fund, and faculty governance. These general files are arranged alphabetically by topic. Individual faculty files are arranged alphabetically by last name, and include biographical information, contract details, and matters pertaining to teaching at NEC.

Student Files are arranged chronologically by academic year, and include records pertaining to NEC students between the years 1999 and 2005.

The Special Events series is comprised of files pertaining to NEC events held between 1995 and 2007. Files in this series pertain to NEC Commencements and Convocations, Steiner’s 2001 Presidential Inauguration, the Presidential Lecture Series, and various fundraising concerts.  Included in the Presidential Inauguration files are three folders of congratulatory certificates from colleges and universities, as well as a folder of congratulatory correspondence. One oversized congratulatory certificate is stored separately. Files pertaining to the Jordan Hall Centennial in 2003 and the 9/11 Memorial Concert in 2001 are also included in this series. Files in this series are arranged alphabetically by event name. 

The collection’s Subject/Project Files contain both files pertaining to specific projects during Steiner’s presidency, such as the NEC Capital Campaign, as well as records concerning topics of discussion and importance at NEC, such as copyright law and technology use. Of particular interest in this series are the files pertaining to the renovation of the President’s Office in 2002; these records include correspondence, architectural drawings, and financial records. Textile samples from several of the projects documented in these files are stored separately and appear in the Textiles series.

The Writings and Addresses series includes copies of speeches made by Steiner at events, including NEC orientations and commencements, as well as a 2004 op-ed piece. Also included are handwritten notes created by Steiner during the writing process. Files in this series are arranged alphabetically by speech title or event name, and include writings from between 1999 and 2004, as well as undated materials.

The External Files are comprised of correspondence, literature, and publications created by NEC’s many community partners throughout Steiner’s presidency. Among these files are records pertaining to relationships with other higher education institutions, as well as files related to business transactions with companies such as M. Steinert & Sons and Kawai Piano Company. Many records in this series pertain to NEC’s involvement and partnerships with organizations such as WGBH, as well as relationships with accrediting organizations such as NASM and NEASC. Files in this series are arranged alphabetically by organization title.

Photographs in the collection include images of Steiner at NEC events, including commencements and convocations. Also included are undated photographs of Steiner’s office.

The Textiles are comprised of sample materials from the President’s Office renovation, the Tie Project, and the Scarf Project. These materials are related to projects listed in the Subject/Project Files series.
