August 31, 2022

Stephen Friedlaender

The NEC community mourns the loss of Stephen Friedlaender, who passed away on August 19, 2022.

Boston-based architect Stephen “Steve” Friedlaender was a powerful force for the advancement of classical music education at New England Conservatory. As Life Trustee and Chair of the Board of Trustees (2008-2012), he served as a mentor for students and supported their education through the Friedlaender Family Presidential Scholarship. Steve also played a pivotal role in the construction of NEC’s Student Life and Performance Center, making a difference for future generations of students.

In reflecting on Steve’s legacy, NEC President Andrea Kalyn commented:

“Steve was an extraordinary, kind, and warmly generous person, and a much-loved member of our NEC family. All at NEC are so grateful for his many years of leadership, support, and care, grounded in his deep love of music and his commitment to our students. We will miss Steve tremendously.”

A memorial service commemorating Steve’s significant contributions to classical music education is planned for mid-October at NEC.
