A Joyful Fall at NEC: Looking Back!

A journey through the memories and music of NEC’s fall 2022 semester.

(Above: Students were all smiles at a master class taught by acclaimed vocalist and alumnus Michael Mayo ’14.)

It’s been a whirlwind semester at NEC, with hundreds of incredible performances, informal jam sessions with friends, master classes taught by world-renowned musicians and members of the NEC community, rehearsals filled with laughter, and countless memories made. Before we forge into an exciting new year, let’s embark on a visual journey of some of the incredible and fun-filled moments the NEC community had over these last few months.

Students Performing

New and returning jazz students jumped right into their craft at a jam session during the first week back on campus.

Convocation 2022

We began the semester feeling inspired by the words of wisdom and humor of NEC students Yi-Mei Templeman ’22, ’23 GD, Amir Siraj ’23 MM (Harvard-NEC), and Matthew Shifrin ’21, ’23 MM.

The performance season kicked off in Jordan Hall with a truly unforgettable concert featuring NEC’s Philharmonia and soloist Geneva Lewis ‘20, ‘22 AD.

Jazz students entertained audiences all semester long, with October’s “If You Could See Me Now” concert, led by Jazz Studies Chair Ken Schaphorst, being a particular highlight.

CMA Pushing the Limits concert in Jordan Hall

This semester began our celebration of the 50th anniversary of NEC’s Contemporary Musical Arts department. November’s “Pushing the Limits” concert, directed by CMA Co-Chair Hankus Netsky, commemorated the department’s innovative legacy. Current and former students, CMA faculty members, and special guests performed at this celebratory concert!

Rehearsal in the Plimpton Shattuck Black Box Theatre for Perkins Opera Scenes performance of Joseph Rumshinsky's "Di Goldene Kale," 25 October 2022, with CMA ensemble, featuring: Kahne: Audrey Daum Jerome: Thai Johnson Coach: Joel Ayau CMA ensemble Itay Dayan, clarinet Lemuel Marc, trumpet Aiden Coleman, trombone Michele Zimmerman, violin Hankus Netsky, oboe Heyley Qin, cello Solomon Caldwell, bass Avi Randall, piano

Voice students injected some light-hearted humor into a rehearsal for Undergraduate Opera Scenes.

Passengers and staff at Boston’s Logan Airport got the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to conduct NEC’s Wind and Brass ensembles. It was a delight for musicians, conductors, and bystanders alike!

Holiday Pops concert featuring NEC Chamber Singers

Oh, what fun we had at our Holiday Pops concert with Navy Band Northeast!

These are just a handful of the countless memories we made this fall. NEC students and faculty look forward to a well-deserved rest this holiday season, but we are excited for a busy spring full of music, exploration, and fun!
