Contemporary Improvisation student Matthew Shifrin (BM ’21) embodies the spirit of innovation that makes NEC not just a premier conservatory, but an incubator for groundbreaking projects. With support from NEC’s Entrepreneurial Musicianship Department, Matt and his business partner developed a programmable vibrating vest embedded with technology that mimics the sensations of flipping, flying, and falling. This allows a new audience to follow the crime-fighting saga of Marvel’s Daredevil, a blind lawyer by day turned superhero by night.
“My audience will experience a feeling … of complete immersion and inclusion,” Matt explains, “a feeling that blind people rarely experience.” Impressed by their unique contribution to the “ecosystem of arts entrepreneurship,” judges at MIT awarded the Matt and his partner $15,000 as first place winners in the recent Creative Arts Competition.
