Susan Calkins has been composing and teaching music for more than twenty years. Originally from Michigan, she came to Boston to study Jazz Composition at Berklee College of Music, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree and continued with graduate studies at New England Conservatory. After completing her master’s degree at NEC she moved to Paris, France and worked as a composer and performer and began teaching at the American School of Modern Music and the International School of Paris. Several years later, she returned to Boston and continued her work as a music educator with the Wayland Public Schools. In 2012, Susan earned a Doctor of Music in Education degree from Boston University. Currently, she teaches music at the German International School of Boston and with NEC’s Continuing Education division. Besides composing music and writing, Susan enjoys swimming, sailing, tromping the woods with her Labrador retrievers and many other outdoor activities.
