Jessica Lizak

  • Flute (Preparatory & Continuing Education)
  • Chamber Music (Preparatory School)

Flutist Jessica Lizak has rapidly established herself as one of Boston's most versatile young flutists, with a style described as "poised, gorgeous, so musical, and very sweet." She is principal flute of the Atlantic Symphony and section flute of the Orchestra of Indian Hill, and has been a concert soloist with both. She also performs with Opera Boston, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Cantata Singers Orchestra, Gardner Museum Chamber Orchestra, Zamir Chorale, and Marsh Chapel Collegium. She has performed nationally with the New World Symphony in Miami Beach and the Albany Symphony. She has been selected to perform as a Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center (MA), Music Academy of the West (CA), Domaine Forget (Canada), and Interlochen (MI). She was awarded top prizes in several competitions, including the Pappoutsakis Flute Competition, Myrna Brown International Flute Competition, Bohemians Club of the Detroit Symphony Concerto Competition, and was a multiple winner of the Boston University Departmental Award for outstanding musical achievements. She has been a soloist at both the National Flute Convention and the Greater Boston Flute Association's Flute Fair, and she has performed as a chamber musician on WGBH and WCRB.

Lizak has appeared in concert across the United States, Canada, and Israel, and her orchestral solos have been heard in Carnegie, Jordan, and Symphony Hall. In 2008, she was invited as a guest artist to perform at Tanglewood as a guest artist for the Festival of Contemporary Music dedicated to the works of Elliott Carter. Her discography includes three commercial recordings available through the BSO website: a live performance of the American premiere of Carter's opera What Next?,  conducted by James Levine, the first BSO release of live performances of the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, and a musical memento of Tanglewood's 100th-birthday celebration of composer Elliott Carter. She often records with BMOP, Boston’s premier orchestra for newly composed and experimental orchestral works. In addition, she has recorded with recording artists Natalie Merchant and Tim Janis. Lizak can be heard on Merchant’s latest CD release, Leave Your Sleep.

Lizak is also equally committed to education. She has already completed the highest degrees in music performance, which also includes a Concentration in Music Education from NEC. In addition to the NEC Preparatory School, she holds full studios with the Lexington Fine Arts Department and the Winchester Music School, and is on artist faculty with the Boston Youth Symphony. While at BU, she established the first Flute Assistantship position to maintain the flute studio in addition to offering masterclasses and lessons. She has previously taught at Atlantic Union College and Interlochen All-State program. Her inspirational teachers have included Nina Barwell, Leone Buyse, Geralyn Coticone, Marianne Gedigian, Renee Krimsier, Elizabeth Ostling, Fenwick Smith, and Jeff Zook.
