Elizabeth Markey

Division: Expanded Education

Department: Early Childhood and Suzuki

Instrument: Harp

Elizabeth Markey started her Suzuki journey when her then two-year-old daughter announced, “I want to play my own instrument!” Since that time, with her four children, she has participated in hundreds of hours of early childhood music classes, Suzuki method private lessons, group classes, and master classes, and has spent thousands of hours as a Suzuki parent/practice partner. She completed her first Suzuki harp teacher training in 2021 and has been teaching Suzuki harp lessons since that time, both in her private studio and at the Suzuki School of Newton. Meanwhile, Elizabeth taught early childhood music for registered Music Together organizations, homeschool co-ops, churches, and private organizations.

Elizabeth has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Orchestra of Saint Luke’s, the Sun Valley Summer Symphony, and the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony in New York. Although she now focuses on pedagogy, she still performs regularly with the Rivers Symphony and the chamber music group she co-founded with Suzuki teachers Ann Bundy and Rachel Fabulich, Trio Pastorale.

Elizabeth has received awards in national and local competitions, including the Anne Adams Award for full-time study of the harp, the American Harp Society Competition, and the Pittsburgh Concert Society Competition. As a recipient of the Vira I. Heinz Award, Ms. Markey studied with harpist Jana Bouskova in Prague. She received her Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School, where she studied with Nancy Allen, and her Bachelor of Music Degree from Duquesne University, where she was a harp scholarship student of Gretchen Van Hoesen.
