Division: Expanded Education

Department: Strings

Instrument: Double Bass

Adam Gurczak is a bassist, multidisciplinary artist, and consultant working at the intersection of creativity, education, and social impact. Equally comfortable in classical, folk, and contemporary styles, he performs as part of the progressive folk duo So Blue, with various award-winning artists, and in ensembles like the New England Symphony, Boston New Music Initiative, Boston Chamber Symphony, New England Philharmonic, and North Shore Philharmonic. His bass playing has been featured in over 100 recordings, including eight commercially-released albums and a short film, "Off the Horse," featuring Ed Harris and Amy Madigan, for which he co-composed all of the music.

As an educator, he runs his own private studio, serves as faculty at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School and Wayland School of Music, and is a founding faculty member of StringPlay, a creative summer camp for string players focused on skills like arranging, improvising, and performing. His educational philosophy is centered around developing a healthy, sustainable practice — both physically and mentally — that fosters creativity and music-making in all genres. Since 2021, he has annually been a guest lecturer at Harvard University’s Strategic Finance for Non-Profit Leaders course and served on a panel for Music as a Social Force at Berklee College’s Teachers on Teaching conference in 2024. He also serves on the board for the Gilbert Town Fiddlers, of which he is an alum.

Beyond teaching and performing, Adam is the co‑founder of Almanak Creative, where he leads media production and creative consulting projects for artists and arts organizations — from photography and album design to strategic planning and brand strategy. His clients range from independent musicians to arts institutions like Berklee College of Music, Boston College, and Silkroad — the non-profit organization and GRAMMY Award-winning ensemble founded by Yo-Yo Ma, with whom he also formerly served as marketing manager and education programs manager.

Adam was part of the 2024–2025 cohort of the Global Leaders Institute, accepted as one of 70 people from 29 countries, receiving an MBA in Arts Innovation with modules co-curated by institutes at Harvard, Georgetown, Stanford, Duke, University of Chicago, and more. Adam has a Master of Music from Boston Conservatory at Berklee and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Arizona with a BM in music performance, a BA in Italian studies, and a thematic minor in global studies. He studied under the tutelage of Dr. Dan Swaim, Dr. Philip Alejo, Susan Hagen, and Joseph Holt.
