Program Structure

The Certificate Program is organized into four sequential levels, designed to support steady musical growth over time. Students are evaluated each year, with each level typically taking 1–2 years to complete.

At every stage, students develop:

  • Technical skill and control
  • Personal musical expression
  • Confidence across a wide range of repertoire

While students of any age may participate, consistent, long-term study is key to success in the program.

Students interested in joining NEC Prep’s Certificate Program should complete the following steps:

  • Speak with your private lesson teacher: Let your private lesson teacher know that you are interested in participating in the Certificate Program. Your teacher can help determine whether the program is a good fit for your goals and current course of study.
  • Register for the Certificate Program in ASAP: Visit the ASAP registration portal and choose the Certificate Program option that matches your area of interest. Registration for the 2026-27 academic year will open in mid-June.
  • Enroll in the appropriate programs: Register for the required programs that correspond with your Certificate Program track and level.

Earning a Certificate reflects achievement across all areas of study, including:

  • Private lessons
  • Academic classes
  • Chamber music
  • Large ensembles

The program is designed to support a range of goals—from personal enrichment to preparation for conservatory-level study.

At the end of each academic year, eligible students are awarded their certificates at the NEC Prep School Graduation and Awards Ceremony. Outstanding students may also receive special recognition through departmental and ensemble awards.
