NEC Honors Ensemble: Petra (Contemporary Musical Arts)
Each year, an audition committee of professional musicians and faculty selects a few exceptional student ensembles to represent the NEC Honors Ensemble Program. The ensembles work with a faculty coach and are given an opportunity to perform a spring recital in NEC's Jordan Hall.

The members of tonight's 2024-2025 Honors Ensemble, Petra, are students from the Contemporary Musical Arts department, coached by Farayi Malek and Joseph Copeland.

Petra is a vibrant blend of sounds, where the rhythmic pulse of Haïtian/African Diaspora music meets the melodic beauty of R&B, Jazz and Brazilian Music. Coached by Farayi Malek and Joseph Copeland, Petra features Paul July Joseph (drums/percussion - Haïti), Pitiki Aliakai (voice/nanga - Uganda), Kayden Carter (voice/flute - USA), Ben Walker (bass - USA), and Peter Vazquez (piano - USA). The ensemble explores a sonic landscape that is both familiar and excitingly new.
