NEC Festival: Of Reminiscences and Reflections – Celebrating Gunther Schuller’s 100th Birthday

This special event includes live performances, recorded audio, projected images, and commentary featuring Gunther Schuller and others, celebrating Schuller’s deep effect on numerous musicians and path of 20th and 21st century music.
The concert will feature performances by pianists Ran Blake, Fred Hersch, Randall Hodgkinson, and Christopher O’Riley; vocalist Dominique Eade; violinist Joel Smirnoff; French horn player Richard Todd; the Gramercy Trio with violinist Sharan Leventhal, cellist Jonathan Miller, and Hodgkinson; the duo Marimolin with marimbist Nancy Zeltsman and Leventhal; bassist Ed Schuller; drummer George Schuller. Ken Schaphorst will lead NEC students in Celka Ojakangas’ winning work of the Gunther Schuller Centennial Third Stream Composition Contest.

This performance is part of the NEC Festival, which will celebrate the legacy of Gunther Schuller, president of NEC between 1967 and 1977 with a week-long series of concerts and discussions. In addition to reflecting on his work as a composer, conductor and scholar, the legacy of Gunther Schuller’s influence on NEC will be demonstrated through a range of collaborative presentations.
