NEC Festival: Contemporary Musical Arts Today – A Global Vision Realized
In the 1970s, NEC put out two LPs entitled Third Stream Today, showing the musical world how NEC President Gunther Schuller and faculty members Ran Blake, George Russell, Joe Maneri, and others played significant roles in recognizing the artistic convergence of diverse musical genres and moving it forward. Now boasting close to fifty students from all over the world, today’s Contemporary Musical Arts program continues to advance Schuller’s vision, holding fast to the idea that the only musical boundaries worth considering in these times are the boundaries of one’s own imagination.

As we celebrate Gunther Schuller’s hundredth birthday by showcasing Contemporary Musical Arts and our innovative approaches to training the complete 21st-century musician, a vision often articulated by Schuller, we also honor our department’s leaders: Chair Emeritus Ran Blake (department chair 1972 - 2005), Allan Chase (2005-2008), Hankus Netsky (2008 - 2025), and current Chair Eden MacAdam-Somer. Their leadership has been instrumental in shaping the department into a vibrant, global community, fostering creativity and cross-cultural dialogue that will continue to inspire generations to come.

Tonight's program is produced by Eden MacAdam-Somer and Hankus Netsky.
