A Concert to Benefit Tunefoolery Music
Music Director Jotaro Nakano leads the orchestra of Boston’s healthcare community in a program exploring the duality and drama of the human experience through Tchaikovsky's beloved ballet score, Swan Lake. The program will open with Colección de Realidades by Diana Syrse, a composer and singer from Mexico whose piece explores the relationship between photographic images and memory.
Joining the LSO for the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1 will be cello soloist and composer Joshua Roman, hailed for his “effortlessly expressive tone… and playful zest for exploration” (New York Times), as well as his “extraordinary technical and musical gifts" and “blend of precision and almost improvisatory freedom… that goes straight to the heart" (San Francisco Chronicle). His genre-bending programs have grown out of an “enthusiasm for musical evolution that is as contagious as his love for the classics" (Seattle Times), and he has collaborated with artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, DJ Spooky, Tony-winner/MacArthur Genius Bill T. Jones, Grammy Award-winning East African vocalist Somi, and Tony Award-nominated actor Anna Deavere Smith.
A portion of the proceeds from this concert will benefit the LSO’s Community Partner, Tunefoolery. 2025 marks Tunefoolery Music’s thirty-first year of connecting music with mental health. Founded at a drop-in center in Cambridge, MA, for individuals with psychiatric disabilities, Tunefoolery began as a group of four musicians who performed 15 concerts for family, friends, and peers in their first year. Today, as a Boston-based nonprofit supported by the Mass Cultural Council and the MA Dept. of Mental Health, Tunefoolery has grown to 25 active musicians (age 25-77!) who play a variety of instruments and musical genres and benefit from the organization’s performance opportunities, music education programs, and supportive community. This past year, Tunefoolery performed over 700 gigs at hospitals, shelters, mental health centers, and nursing homes, providing music to audiences that typically lack access to live performances.
All programs are subject to change.
