First Monday at Jordan Hall: Bach, Kurtág, Enescu, and Stravinsky
April’s First Monday concert celebrates the musical genius of three giants of 20th and 21st century music. Stravinsky’s infamous score, which caused riotous conditions at the Parisian premiere, is presented here in it’s original blueprint, with the piano timbre allowing us to powerfully experience the work’s complex harmonic and rhythmic language. Romanian by birth, educated in Vienna, and proud Parisian, George Enescu’s music displays characteristics of all of these influences, vividly on display in this exceptional and somewhat rarely heard work. Finally, Hungarian living legend György Kurtág has recently turned 100! Along with his string trio version of Signs, Games, and Messages, the concert begins with two masterful Bach transcriptions he performed frequently with his beloved late wife, Márta.

All are invited to attend a special Meet the Artist preconcert talk at 7:00 p.m. in Jordan Hall. First Monday Artistic Co-Chair Soovin Kim will be joined in conversation by pianist Marc-André Hamelin.
