About EM
EM is available to students through individual advising, courses, project funding, and paid experiential learning. The EM Team are conservatory-trained professionals with experience in many genres of music, from classical to rock, both onstage and beyond. NEC students and alumni have access to free one-on-one advising sessions about anything from bio writing and resumes to grant proposals, long term projects, career direction, and artistic goals.
Our office is on the second floor of the St. Botolph Building (SB201), at the end of the hallway.

Meet The EM Team!
Ryan Mewhorter (He/Him) I EM Program Manager
Ryan is a classical Baritone from Clifton Park, New York. Ryan is an active musician in the Boston area and holds the position of Program Manager here at the EM office. Ryan's responsibilities include overseeing internship opportunities, facilitating grant operations, and is available for advising, covering topics ranging from EM Grants to career planning.
Ryan has experience in multiple fields. Administrative credits include serving as Schedule and Travel Coordinator for Opera Saratoga's 2022 Young Artist Summer Festival and Ensemble Manager for Boston University's BU Singers. Ryan was the founder and president of a student-led coalition whose mission was to provide musical services for nursing home residents in the Central New York region. Ryan has taught music in K-12 classrooms as well as undergraduate classrooms. Ryan had served as a music director in after-school music programs in Shenendehowa High School and Schenectady High School.
Ryan currently sings with the Cantata Singers as well as the Trinity Episcopal Church in Newton. Ryan holds a bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance from Syracuse University and a master's degree in Vocal Performance from Boston University.

Kiyoshi Hayashi I Career Advising Manager
Kiyoshi Hayashi is a professional violinist, health and career coach, speaker, and entrepreneur based in Boston, MA.
As a performer, Kiyoshi is the founder and violinist of the award-winning Rasa String Quartet, Co-Artistic Director of the string ensemble and nonprofit organization, Palaver Strings, and frequently performs with notable ensembles around New England including the Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra, Phoenix Orchestra, and A Far Cry.
He has won top prizes in international and national competitions, including the Associazione Europea Di Musica E Comunicazione International Chamber Music Competition in Italy, the Music Teachers National Association Chamber Music Competition, the Chamber Music Yellow Springs National Competition, and the St. Botolph Club Foundation Emerging Artist Award. He has collaborated with a diverse array of artists, including the Maxwell String Quartet, Roomful of Teeth, Kinan Azmeh, Maeve Gilchrist, Dana Lynn, and iconic rock bands like The Who and The Eagles.
His principal teachers include Nicholas Kitchen, Almita and Roland Vamos, and Thomas Wermuth, and he received his B.M. from the New England Conservatory of Music in 2016.
In addition to his musical endeavors, Kiyoshi is very passionate about wellness and personal development. He is a certified personal trainer and integrative nutrition health coach and currently serves as the Career Advising Manager at the New England Conservatory of Music.
Previously, he was the Director of Community Engagement for Palaver Strings, co-taught a course at the Longy School of Music titled "Music and Civic Engagement," and has delivered career workshops at institutions like the New England Conservatory of Music, the Longy School of Music, and Vital Village Network. In 2019, Kiyoshi launched his personal health and career coaching business where he empowers young musicians in developing the entrepreneurial skills and holistic lifestyle necessary to design meaningful and sustainable careers.
Beyond his administrative roles, Kiyoshi actively performs with community arts organizations like Shelter Music Boston and Palaver Strings and has shared his expertise as a teaching artist at Apple Hill’s Summer Chamber Music Festival, Phillips Exeter Academy, and the Roxbury Youth Orchestra.
When he's not performing or coaching, Kiyoshi can be found on morning runs, playing soccer and tennis, practicing yoga, reading, delving into podcasts, and exploring the outdoors.
