May 30 – July 7, 2023: Undergraduates: experience NEC this summer! Summer courses range from 3-day intensives to 6-week courses, and are open to students from NEC as well as other universities.

Earn 3 credit hours per course, exploring topics ranging from Fundamentals of Musicianship, to Body Mapping, to Sensor-based Instrument Prototyping.

On-campus housing and meals are available at NEC's Student Life and Performance Center, offering beautiful skyline views from the heart of Boston's Avenue of the Arts district.

Register by May 1 to secure your seat. After May 1, rolling registration is available if space permits.

May 30 – July 7, 2023: Calling all graduate students — get ahead on your coursework and experience Boston this summer. Open to graduate students from NEC and other universities.

Earn 3 credit hours per course, through classes that range from 3-day intensives to 6-week courses, exploring theory, modal analysis, music history, and more.

On-campus housing and meals are available at NEC's Student Life and Performance Center, offering beautiful skyline views from the heart of Boston's Avenue of the Arts district.

Summer Orchestra Institute

Young orchestral musicians meet at NEC this July!

July 16 – 30, 2023: Talented young musicians ages 13 – 18 will convene for two weeks of orchestral joy.

NEC Summer Orchestra Institute (SOI) is a full symphony orchestra program open to intermediate to advanced-level strings, brass, winds, and percussion.

Experience full orchestral rehearsals, sectional rehearsals, chamber music reading/coaching sessions, masterclasses, workshops, mock auditions, individual practice time, and two concerts in NEC's historic Jordan Hall.

Silkroad's Global Musician Workshop

A gathering of classical, jazz, folk, and traditional styles.

August 6 – 12, 2023: Led by Contemporary Musical Arts (CMA) faculty member Mike Block and alumna Wu Man, Silkroad's Global Musician Workshop is for musicians 18+ from any musical background — university students, professional and amateur performers, teachers, and teaching artists — with backgrounds in classical, jazz, folk, and traditional styles.

Tuition is free for all accepted musicians, with additional financial aid available for room and board if needed.

Instructors will include NEC Contemporary Musical Arts faculty Hankus Netsky and Balla Kouyaté.

Pinto joins the Expanded Education Division as part of a larger institutional initiative to broaden access to the arts and music education for young people across the City of Boston.
Mon, May 22
New England Conservatory celebrated the largest graduating class in its history on May 21, 2023 at Symphony Hall, awarding honorary degrees to George E. Lewis, Ann Hobson Pilot, and David Zinman. The 152nd Commencement ceremony featured remarks from Lewis as well as Alumni Speaker Mei-Ann Chen ’95, ’98 MM and Student Speaker Brittany Bryant ’23.

Chad Smith ‘95 NEC/Tufts, ‘98 MM returns to Boston from the LA Philharmonic, where he has served as Chief Executive Officer since 2019.
Fri, May 12
Contemporary Musical Arts created space for Grammy nominated jazz and Americana artist Farayi Malek ’17 to embrace all of her musical identities. Malek now teaches in the CMA department, including studio lessons, Contemporary Vocal Ensemble, R&B Ensemble, and Development of Long-Term Harmonic Memory with Ran Blake.
Tue, May 9
New England Conservatory’s Jazz Studies Department has appointed renowned flutist, saxophonist and composer Anna Webber to join the NEC faculty as Co-Chair of the Jazz Studies Department beginning in the fall of 2023.
