Join CMA faculty Eden MacAdam-Somer, Hankus Netsky, Erin Hogan, Warren Senders, and Steve Netsky for some introductory workshops on harmony singing, songwriting, improvisation, Hindustani singing, Klezmer music, and more. Bring your instruments, your voices, and your ears and prepare to jump in. Everyone is welcome - no previous experience is necessary! Stick around for a student-led Open Mic session at 7pm.

2 p.m. | Vocal Harmony Workshop with Erin Hogan
Participants will learn to sing by ear, experiencing the joy, connection, meditative nature of group harmony singing. Through this practice, you'll not only connect deeply with the music, but also grow as an empathetic listener, collaborating and opening your ears to those around you! No choral experience or music-reading abilities required.

3 p.m. | Klezmer Workshop with Hankus Netsky
In this workshop you’ll learn a bit about the history of Eastern European Jewish music while jumping right into playing a tune. All instruments are welcome, including your voice!

4 p.m. | Sing & Play as One: Integrating Voice and Instrument with Eden MacAdam-Somer
Develop the powerful connection between your voice and your instrument in this dynamic, hands-on workshop. We’ll explore how to match tone, pitch, breath, and rhythm across both mediums, using creative games, exercises, and improvisation. While Eden will share insights from a violinist’s perspective, all instruments and voices are welcome - come ready to explore, experiment, and make music together.

5 p.m. | Intro to Hindustani Music with Warren Senders
Hindustani music is one of the world’s great improvisational genres. The repertoire of ragas (melodic forms) and talas (rhythmic cycles) combine to create a musical environment full of expressive potential. This workshop will provide an introduction to some of the music’s basic structures, with plenty of opportunities to sing, play, and create inside this rich dronal environment.

6 p.m. | Songwriters Workshop with Steve Netsky
Get a taste of our Songwriters Workshop experience, where songwriters bring in and play the songs they are working on. All genres are welcome - pop, folk, country, rock, soul, standards, show tunes, etc. We listen carefully to the songs, ask questions, and offer constructive feedback. During the semester, each student works on at least a couple of songs, and chooses one to perform in our concert at the end of the semester.

7 p.m. | Open Mic: CMA Students (and Friends)
Students from the Contemporary Musical Arts Department share their music in live solo and small ensemble performances, in genres ranging from folk to rock to jazz to avant garde, from many corners of the globe. Free and open to the public.
